1987 and Jackson's 7th studio Album - 5 years after 'Thriller' (we've already talked about on this blog). 2 Grammies, one of the best selling records of all time (obviously) it further enhanced Jackson as the king of pop. "The way you make me feel', "Smooth Criminal", "Bad" and "Man in the mirror" are just part of an 11 hit package, song after song. It also marked the last Album with Quincy Jones and Jackson. It debuted at number one worldwide and in the UK was selling 100,000 records a day but never sold more than 'Thriller'. There's little else to say. It's really a must-have Album. Pop, Disco but great just the same and at the time....earth-shattering. It's as simple as that. And a master of Video......

Like JJ Cale last week, here's another man who never really achieved the fame or sales he deserved - John Hiatt. 'Bring the Family' was his 1987 8th Album and first to chart, featuring Ry Cooder (guitar of course), Nick Lowe (bass) and Jim Keltner on Drums. Of course, the excellent single 'Have a little faith in me' got it the attention. You can hear it later, below.
The 'Comes Alive at the Budokan' Album, was 1994 and generally, could be seen as a "greatest Hits" compilation and excellent it is too - notably the production sound for a live Album is terrific. The cover design doesn't do it any favours but gives you a sense of a kicking live gig and the fun of a parody because..... It wasn't recorded at The Budokan (!).... It was recorded throughout North America and the name is a cheeky swipe at the deluge of "At the Budokan" Albums of the time (Dylan) and it also had a go at Frampton's 'Comes Alive' Album. "Have a little faith in me" is here but an excellent "Memphis in the Meantime" (Sun shining? Put the car roof down and turn it up! Real driving track) and "Thing called love" (you'll know Bonnie Raitts cover probably). It's country, blues, rock, nothing else, but great rock at that. He's from Indianapolis and moved early to Nashville and his songs have been covered by everyone from Springsteen to the great Willy De Ville. Still going good at 66 and it's time for you to get to know him.....when the road is dark and you can no longer see.....

John JJ Cale became JJ so as not to be confused with the awful Velvet Underground's John Cale and there is none. No confusion at all. JJ Cale is a bluesman (the 'Tulsa' sound - he was from Oklahoma) perhaps best known for writing songs for others and most notably Clapton. Not least, their work together on the superb 2006 grammy Album 'The Road to Escondido'. This Album was Cale's 1972 debut 'Naturally' and featured his song 'After Midnight' which of course, had already been a hit for Clapton in 1970. This record in fact was to capitalise on Clapton's hit and Cale also wrote 'Cocaine' for Clapton. This Album also features 'Call me the Breeze' which you'll know best from Lynyrd Skynyrd. 'Magnolia' and 'Crazy Mama' (which The Band covered) are here too, the best known songs of Cale in his own right. Cale started as a Sound Engineer so you can hear the production through his songs - he was thinking always about the output. He was a great guitarist too with very deft, gentle touches and possibly never achieved the fame he deserved but that said, never cared either. He was the musician's musician. He died at 74 in 2013. Another great intro to Cale is of course, his Greatest Hits.
Here you go. Here's some genius for you....

A New Ray Lamontagne Album ('Part of the light') just released in May, prompted us to look back at this debut Album, 'Trouble' from 2004. And glad we are that we did. Every time we hear him we think of Van - no bad thing - but just listen to the opening bars of the opening track 'Trouble' and all you hear is something from 'Tupelo Honey' or 'Hard nose the Highway'. That sort of era and great stuff too. He says he was inspired by Stephen Stills 'Treetop Flyer' to get writing and interesting to see Stephen's daughter Jennifer, features on this Album. The title song 'Trouble' is great but perhaps overplayed, however, a listen to 'Jolene' or 'Hannah' or 'Hold you in my Arms' categorises this Album under "excellent". Jolene and Hannah are superb classics and you can hear them both at the end here. Gravely nasally country vocals (he's from New Hampshire) and he started as support for John Gorka (who you may not know, but another great singer songwriter. Check him out - 'Land of the Bottom Line'). He's very much out of the public eye and the Trouble Album was the one that got him the musical attention. Rightly so - it is a great, great record.

Here's the Album that knocked Oasis 'Morning Glory' off the charts in 1996. Actually you need to get this version, the 20th anniversary edition of 'Expecting to Fly' their debut, with those bonus tracks. The bumper value edition. The Bluetones are a London Band, currently on a UK tour, having split and reformed. This album went platinum and largely on the strength of the excellent single 'Bluetonic'. A 4 piece.....but very much in that Oasis vein - melodic rock, great songs. A little Brit Pop perhaps, but great songs and ideal for those bright Summer days. There's a chance you might not know them and so it's always good to get something new recommended, which we like to do. This had a great cult following and really are well worth the listen. If nothing else for 'Bluetonic' which is up here first. You'll know when you hear it.

2002, 'Come Away with me' is New Yorker Norah Jones (actually Geetali Shankar! but changed her name at 16) first full length Album and multiple (5) Grammy winner with over 30 million copies sold. Recorded in New York it's pop but with a jazz twist (Bill Frisell plays guitar on this for example - true jazzman). People box off Norah as "a poppy queen" but that's a mistake. Her own influences are Billie Holiday and the great, Bill Evans and this Album came from 'Blue Note Records'. So jazz to the core and country (she grew up in Texas). This will give you a sense why not - a cover of Hank Williams country 'Cold cold heart'. Her second Album 'Feels like home' is very country and she was a part of Dylan's 'Hank Williams Project'.
But the big singles were the excellent 'Don't know why' and 'Come away with me' - both are below. You may not know that she's the daughter of Ravi Shankar (Famous Indian Sitar player and you'll know him best probably from his work with George Harrison. He died in 2012). She's a jazz pianist but also a sax player. Another great Album that Streamabout recommends!

1999 and Macy Gray's (actually she's Natalie McIntyre) debut Album became a worldwide hit. She got her stage name from that of a neighbour's mailbox. She saw it, she liked it. From Ohio, her unusual raspy voice created a very new sound. This is Soul, Blues, Jazz and has an extraordinary list of sidemen on it. Nearly 40 session heads which for a debut (given budgets) is unbelievable. But it shows clear intent to get the sound right. And she did. The singles 'Do Something' and 'I try' were huge and the Album got her a Grammy. The title track (below) is terrific. You'll know the songs when you hear them. Famously in 2001 she was booed off an NFL football field for forgetting the lyrics to the US National Anthem - not the best move for her. In 2003 she also achieved great critical acclaim for the Album 'The trouble with being myself' and her 2004 'The very best' went platinum. 'On How life is' is a great record. You do need to be in the mood but so worthwhile and the production is excellent. Another Streamabout recommends! Have a listen.

John Cougar, John Mellencamp, John Cougar Mellencamp, Pearly Doggy (true) name/s come from German extraction and you didn't know this, he was born in 1951 in Indiana (where he still lives) with Spina Bifida which was corrected as a child. 1982 his fifth but breakthrough Album 'America Fool' came largely because of radio plays of the single 'Jack and Diane' (and 'Hurts so good'). They are the 2 songs that carry the record but it was one of the best selling 1982 records and still is. That said, he's had a lot of great rockin' Americana songs - 'Pink Houses' stands out for us, 'Small Town', 'ROCK in the USA', 'Crumblin Down', 'Lonely ol night', 'Paper in Fire', all very rock and roll. If you're in the mood, they'll get you going. It's authentic American rock in a Springsteen/Tom Petty way. You'll find a lot of them on this Album:
He's an established painter, actor and the founder of Farm Aid, dated Christine Brinkley and Meg Ryan. Very Democrat and some songs are anti Republican, so he's become political too. A wide and varied life as he hits 70. For Streamabout, he's one of those Artists that's respected because, like the songs or not, he's genuine. A good guy. But definitely needs video help as you'll see (!). But great songs to cheer you up! Get American Fool.

What? A 'Greatest Hits' Album? Well when you're dealing with 'Earth Wind and Fire' this is the way to go. Soul, Funk, Jazz but pretty much Disco, from Chicago in the 1970s. 20 Grammy nominations, 90 million records sold, making them one of the best selling groups of all time! Surprised? Not really because they were the sound of the 70's. You'll probably know 'Fantasy', 'Boogie Wonderland', 'After the love has gone', 'Let's Groove' but for sure, their great track, 'September'. This is bringing it back to influences for bands like Daft Punk. It's heavy bass lines with great high vocals and harmonies. "Feel good music" but with great songwriting. These are happy songs but with a groove that's under produced for once - they let the song carry you and not the album production. This 1998 Album is songs from 1973-81 and was updated as a 1999 release. That's the one to get. Sun is Shining, Summer's here, Crank it up and if this doesn't get you going, you're dead. In Streamabout, it got them dancing. And that's good.... 'Do you remember, the 21st night of September'.....

You can't mention the man with the most unlikely name in music, without mentioning his 'Silk Degrees' Album. But even though it's his 'Greatest Hits Live' record we're going for - you get two for the price of one this week.
The Live album is a stunner and probably because it was recorded in San Fran 2004 (there's a DVD of the show) when Boz was 60....so the voice has become more smoky. 'Silk Degrees' from 1976 was his 7th Album and his breakthrough with the single 'Lido Shuffle'. It went 5 times platinum. The Live Album which we highly recommend has most of the 'Silk Degrees' tracks anyway like 'Georgia', 'Harbor Lights', 'Lowdown' and 'Lido'. This is jazz, blues, soul with a little bit of John Martyn in there. Some of his band ended up with 'Little Feat' and 'Toto' whilst he's played with Michael Mc Donald, Donald Fagen (The Dan) and he was the lead singer in The Steve Miller Band where he started. So you get the picture. From Ohio, moved to Texas and has always been around the fringes - still is. So you might not know him too much. Good to have something new. And this is stunning, stunning, stunning. Talk about a tight band and orchestration! Listen to 'Lido Shuffle' and 'Slow Dancer' here....
And then the rest.

We don't often do this. Introduce a current Album with a few notable exceptions - Kendricks 'Butterfly', Beyonce 'Lemonade', Leon Bridges, The Allergies 'Push on' - but when something new is out on here and the world stops, we like to bring it for your delectation. And this, our friends, is one of those. Thanks to the great John Kelly @lyricfm who just has a stunning music brain, we heard this and were blown away. It's their 2016 Debut but only released really in 2017 and getting attention now. When you look at the cover it has a 50's vibe and hear this and you'll think it's of that time. It's not. Try and find 'Groovy Baby' (very James Brown) on Spotify and Itunes and you'll get what we mean.
It's Funk, it's Soul and it's a resurgent sound that's simply, knockout. Few Albums stop us in our tracks but this one did. From Louisiana but recorded in a "dingy Indiana Basement" on a budget of, wait for it, $452 and that Deep South vibe shows. You need to check it out. "Is it any wonder" is the track that was most replayed in Streamabout, but it's all terrific. All of it. They're on Tour as we speak, across Europe. See that here https://www.durandjonesandtheindications.com/tour/ Trust us - have we been wrong yet?
