Listen, we don't offer this up voluntarily....but just that we're asked. And asked and asked......plus it was on in the Office all this week. "Have you a good Christmas Album idea?" alright then, this is it. 1957, Sinatra (he was 42) and more notably, Nelson Riddle and a full Orchestra. A Jolly Christmas. It was re-released in 1963 called 'The Sinatra Christmas Album' with another cover, in case you're thinking of getting both.....don't. One's enough. It's the sort of record that's a bit different to have on in the background but as these records go, it is definitely, as good as you get. Sinatra always adds a bit of class. Yes, they are all here from 'Jingle Bells' to 'Silent Night'. What else can you say expect it's well, 'Christmassy'. But you know, you'll need an Album this year, so try this. At least you'll seem, eh, respectable. We know for a fact too, this will be our biggest read Blog of the year. Betcha.
Next week - Album of the Year. And it's not Lorde. It's not even Kendrick... That all aside, we're definitely getting in the mood because deadlines aside, there's something magical about it all. Magnificent really and may we wish you all a very, very Happy Christmas.....thank you very much for reading. Now here you go. This'll put you in the mood. 'Nancy and Dutch' whom he refers to at the start are of course, The Reagans. Good old Franko.

Not to recognise the passing of Glen Campbell would be a disgrace and indeed, of course, his Albums have got a sales spike following his death. What we noted last week, was that the great Dwight Yoakam highlighted this 1967 record as his key moment - the music he grew up on - "By the time I get to Phoenix". And the Album cover is a classic. But...we would also suggest that you look at this too.
He created an extraordinary 60 Studio Albums and 7 Live Albums but the best way to hear him (if you're not a die hard fan) is this 'Rhinestone Cowboy' a "best of". There's another of the same name so look for this Album cover above. There's so many songs and of course, Jimmy Webb songs including 'By the time I get to Phoenix' which is still very difficult to listen to. On 'Rhinestone Cowboy' you'll get 'Dreams of an everyday housewife', 'Galveston', 'Mary in the Morning' and in our view, his best ever song, 'Wichita Lineman'. Born in Arkansas 1936, he was the 7th of 12 children on a farm growing cotton. He moved to LA in 1960 to become a session man having played in local bands. His guitar work was so good, he worked with Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, The Monkees, Frank Sinatra, Phil Spector and of course, Elvis. That's some line-up and only a part of it - that's how good he was. In 1964 he became part of The Beach Boys, filing in for Brian Wilson no less. You probably didn't know that Glen's the guitarist on 'Pet Sounds'. Married 4 times, 5 Daughters/3 Sons, he had problems with Cocaine and Alcoholism. He died of course of Alzheimer's having been diagnosed in 2011 which prompted his 'goodbye' Album, "Ghost on the Canvas" (a further record "Adios" was released this year). He died in Nashville (where else) on August 8th. We count 21 Grammy awards.......and such a list of tributes, it's hard not to think that he was so well liked. A superb body of work. The best track ever - His still on the line...1968 Jimmy Webb, here you go.

Often referred to as 'The Nelson Riddle' Album, this was Sinatra's tenth Album from 1956 and considered his best by most or thereabouts with 1955's "In the wee small hours" record. It's a smooth classic though and lovely to hear in the background of Streamabout's offices as a lot of the tunes are well known still. "It happened in Monterey", "You make me feel so young", "Pennies from Heaven", Cole Porter's "I've got you under my skin", "Anything goes" and so on. Play it and you'll know them. It's Nelson Riddle's arrangements that stand out (you'll often hear Van sing about 'Nelson Riddle Strings') and great orchestration. Plus Sinatra sings on the half beat and was 41 when it was recorded having released his first Album in 1946. So ten Albums in ten years. From a tenement in Hoboken New Jersey, the only child of Italian immigrants, he was an icon of his time and one smooth crooner nevermind Actor ('From here to Eternity' Academy Award winner). Actually given current elections, he actively campaigned for Truman, JFK (who he was very close to) and Reagan. He died in 1988 at 82 by the way, but when you look at his career, it's hard to fathom that one person could achieve so much in one life. Extraordinary. And probably, he was the greatest singer of the 20th Century. This is an Album you should have and go to every now again, well worth a listen. It's for Swinging Lovers so there you go. Listen to Nelson Riddle and Sinatra at their best here....
