What we're listening to: Tom Waits 'Frank's Wild Years'

Whilst everyone seems to have 'Closing Time' from 73 and 'Swordfishtrombones' from 83, this is a little gem you might not have come across.

And there's a reason for that - it's one for the fans because it's hardcore Tom Waits.

'Frank's Wild Years' from 1987 and subtitled 'Un Operachi Romantico in two acts' because it was the soundtrack for a play written with his wife, Kathleen Patricia Brennan (nope. Illinois, but her grandfather was from Kerry Ireland where Waits and Brennan spent their honeymoon). The play premiered in Chicago in 1986.

It's very heavy going but stunningly beautiful when you get into it. It takes work, no doubt.

'Hang on St. Christopher' is magical but Waits sings through a loudhailer - somehow, somewhere, that works. 'Straight to the top' is over the top greatness as is 'Blow wind Blow'. 'I'll be gone' and 'Way down in the hole' (used in 'The Wire') are smashing but perhaps the highlight is 'Innocent when you dream' with beautiful, tinkly piano. It was covered later by Elvis Costello.

'Cold cold ground' another standout you'll hear just below this.

So there's lots of great music in here but.....(and there is a but)....you have to like Waits. And you have to persevere like all good records. It's strange, it's different but worth it.

Trust us. Get into it.
Have a listen here and you'll get a sense.
Just don't say no, too quick......
