Apple.Share price slips, Cook responds.

Apple, on foot of recent Q1 numbers which were seemingly 'below expectations' and which you can read about by scrolling down this blog, means their share price is slipping.

It's -11% since April 26th (-27% over the year). An 8 straight day decline and this hasn't happened since 1998.

Sales in China were also -26% so investor confidence is a bit rattled with headline investor Carl Icahn, dumping his stock and adding to the downward pressure.

Tim Cook was interviewed yesterday to rally support and as he points out, things are still pretty good at Apple.

Q1 had 50 Billion+ in revenues; 10 Billion in profits. "No one else is earning that" he said, "Last year we earned 53 Billion in profits and I think the number 2 company was 24 Billion". He also talked about "great innovation in the pipeline" and if you looked at China on a two-year basis, "Apple grew +70%. It's hard-pressed to say those aren't good results".

He also called India a market with huge potential.

Cook is right. This is an extraordinary company showing dazzling high numbers and will continue. The donkeys of Wall Street can't see past short term declines in their supposed high expectations. They're simply playing the market, shorting for their own financial gain rather than a true reflection of company value and activity.

So be it. But don't let that be statement on true value long term. 10 Billion in profits. In a Quarter. No reason to panic.

Apple Sales Fall. It's still all good.

Iphone Sales have fallen for the first time ever and with that, Apple's Revenues have fallen too for the first time.

Sales of a staggering 50 Billion+ for 3 months ending in March were -13% on last years comparable. Talk about being a victim of your own success.

Revenues from services (Itunes, Apps etc) were +20%. Apple watch performance was unclear but seemingly 'good'.

Iphone sales which generally accounts for 65% of Apple's Revenue, were down in the quarter from 61 million to 51 million and Ipad/Mac sales were also down ....but slow downs in Ipad sales is becoming a trend.

It seems that 'the Mac premium' is not being paid by consumers as easily anymore and of course, IPhone has to reach saturation at some point.

Phone upgrades too, are less attractive as the OS remains 'more or less' the same and where do you go after Iphone6? Added to that, publicity about the FBI and Tax issues, have a negative affect.

A profit of 10.5 Billion usd is down -23% but of course, just keeps adding to he massive Apple cashpile. Enough cash that it could have bailed out Ireland in the recent downfall for example. Apple is stronger than a lot of countries.

However, it's a significant drop and a significant moment with the company also suffering from a lack of innovation with no new brilliant products on the horizon.

But what a company. The trail blazer, the cash king and still generating sales of 50 Billion usd in a quarter...what's not to like?

But where do you go now? Rebuild trust in the Apple brand with an extensive marketing campaign that shows the value in Apple products and generates usage of the services.

Watch for it.

Apple is 40. Today.

Apple turns 40 today. Yep, it was April Fool's Day, I eh, kid you not.

Now employing nearly 150,000 people and with a value of 700 Billion usd, it's been a long road.

Steve Jobs and Woz met in 1971 but it was in 1976 that they launched Apple1, 50 of them, which 'they' built by hand.

If you still have one, it's worth about 400k usd today. It was launched to their pals at The Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto.

1977 they launched Apple2; 1978 the external floppy drive; 1980 The Apple3 and went public.

In 1981 Jobs became Chairman; 1983 was the launch of 'Lisa' and John Sculley joined.

1984 was the famous commercial which Jobs originally voiced and then replaced with Richard Dreyfuss; 1985 was when 'Lisa' was dropped and Jobs left.

1987 Woz left; 1989 was the first portable (Mac book); 1991 it launched Quicktime; 1997 Jobs returned and the famous partnership with Microsoft; 1998 was the Imac; 2001 Itunes and the Ipod; 2006 The MacBook Pro.

2007 The Iphone; 2008 The Macbook Air; 2010 The Ipad; 2011 Siri and ICloud.

In 2007 Jobs resigned and Tim Cook took over with Jobs dying that October at 56.

Since then, the Ipad mini in 2012, Beats in 2014 and the Apple Watch.

Long story, great company based entirely on one word.
Innovation.

Apple announce Irish expansion today.

Apple announces further expansion today in Cork, Ireland (South West). Tim Cook was there in person this morning.

They've been in Ireland for 30 years and announced a further 1,000 jobs by 2017 on the back of the 5,000 Irish direct employees already. And that's up by 25% this year alone.

It's estimated that Apple's Irish operations support about 18,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Fairly vast.

It makes Apple, one of Ireland's biggest employers/investors.

IMusic? Stunningly Magnificent.

And this Ladies and Gentlemen, is about as stunning as you get.

Apple IMusic simply has just turned the music business on its head to the benefit of listeners.

It is superb.

Does it allow you to listen to any Album? Yes it does
Can you add to that to your music collection (my music) as if you own it? You can, unlimited
Can you buy the Album directly through Itunes? Yep although we're not sure why you would
Can you "follow" artists as in a Social Media way? Sure
Can you form playlists or listen to curated playlists by artists? Indeed, like the one Joni Mitchell just made
Is it easy and beautiful to navigate? It is, although like a new Fax machine, takes a day to get around it
Is there anything wrong with it? Not a bit

All for under 10 euro a month with a free 3 month trial which presumably, is designed to attract in those Spotify or Pandora users whom, quite frankly, it's hard to see why they'd move back.

If you have an Apple product it's there by now and you should simply sign up.

That's objective recommendation too, because we have nothing to do with Apple but just thought it was something very cool.

What it will do is of course, lose revenue to Apple (and the artists) from downloads and replace that revenue with streaming subscriptions. Which probably, will mean less for everyone in the business.

Although, the user benefits with every possible Album for a low cost.

On the other hand, it also democratises music, allowing you access to free new Albums that you'd never had bought you thought, but can now listen to and might stream. So it's great for new bands.

But it's a Wow. Really. Did you get that? A total, complete WOW.

Apple to encourage Ad Blocking. Publishers worry.

Ad Blocking, which really hurts online publishers who depend on Advertising, just got easier.

It looks like Apple have just made it easier to block Ads on Ipad and Iphones through their new 'safari' browser release by allowing ad blocking extensions as an option.

Ad blocking is growing by over +70% a year with 144 million users in 2014. It's going to hurt Google and Facebook and will push publishers onto Apple's iad product in order to have Ads on Apple devices.

So basically, if Apple is bringing traffic to Ads via their Safari, they want a cut and encouraging general ad blocking is one way.

We'll see but, not a good day for publishers.

Apple's new Music Service. Coming, today.

Apple's new music streaming service is on the way and it's going to change ITunes.

Called 'Apple Music' it will compete with the likes of Spotify, Deezer and Pandora and will be all encompassing (radio and downloading including) probably costing about 10 USD a month and be pre-installed in the next generation of iphones (giving it instant market distribution).

Plus Apple's extraordinary cash reserves, will give it the marketing edge on competitors simply by outspending them (Spotify has 15 million subscribers - the market is circa 40 million subscribers currently).

Unlike Spotify, Apple Music will not have a free tier so either you're in or you're not but they're likely to bundle some free months are part of a signing up offer.

Streaming may of course, hamper the declining download market which in turn, will impact on the general music business. But Streaming has shown significant growth - it's what consumers want vis-a-vis downloading.

All coming in an announcement today.
But it's a big change for the way in which Apple are attacking music.
And a big change for artists too.

Apple Cork to build the car?

Our post of Tuesday about Apple doing an electric car gets legs...Project Titan as it's called.

They're planing a major expansion of their faciity in Cork, Ireland. They invested 300 million over a year ago and now they're looking to build more - a giant factory.

But interestingly, an employment notice looking for a Procurement Manager, listed a requirement for experience in Robotics, Aeronautic and Automotive Industries

So that's not to build more watches then...

Apple are doing a car.

Apple is looking at doing a car.

Okay, it's a rumour but it's too much of a rumour not to be true (!)

The Fiat CEO has said it, we know of the secretive 'Operation Titan' at Apple, we know of the Tesla ambitions, we know there's a 'garage facility' in Cupertino CA, we know Apple are hiring engineers for robotics and we know Apple have talked about it - going all the way back to Steve Jobs.

And the tech industry are talking about it.

Perhaps Self-driving and/or Electric but definitely makes sense in the "connected car" market which will be the future.

There's a lot of work in that and a lot of cash. But as a car brand, Apple will be cool and immediately have a positive younger market.

So all of it makes sense.
You heard it here.

Another boost today for Programmatic buying. This time from Apple.

The automation of the media marketplace by bringing buyers and sellers together online through RTB or 'programmatic buying' continues at pace and noting our post of only yesterday (follows below).

Today Apple announced it was extending its mobile advertising network to itunes radio via programmatic ad buying. Targeting includes the ability to cross reference customer mobile numbers and emails with market data - surely one that will worry privacy advocates.

Of course customers can 'opt out' but those that do, is tiny in number.

Brands can also get involved in customer match opportunities which if you use itunes, you'll know it well.

It's guessed that itunes radio has nearly 50 million users and it competes with the likes of Spotify. Apple's carplay will also surely give it momentum "in car", a key marketing tool for radio sellers as more and more 'connected cars' hit the market. Indeed, it's now standard on the likes of the new Suzuki Vitara.

More and more media owners are going to be forced to move to RTB. Simply, it WILL be the marketplace in time.

Apple's Watch is on time. Today.

The launch today of The Apple Watch, is another milestone in the history of the company introducing, their first foray into wearable tech. It's as significant as the Ipad, Itunes or Iphone.

It's going to be available mid-April but with a starting price of about 350 usd and upgrades to about 550 usd. Not cheap.

Built into it, are a whole series of clever bits which no doubt, will extend in time but it does need to be paired with an Iphone 5 (or better) to work.

It has a fitness app so you can "watch" (ha!) the calories you burn and select a goal every day. It also keeps track of heart rate for training. An easy interface allows you to swipe for weather, your calendar, your music and other stuff, like Uber.

Siri is in there too, so too email and instant messenger (text in effect). Plus you can take calls with an in-built mic.

Many different faces too combined with an 18 hour battery (so you'll have to recharge your watch at night). And it tells the time - in whatever zone you move to.

Bizarrely it doesn't take pictures or video. You'd have thought there was a great GoPro opportunity there!

But this will be a standard - we'll all have one - and possibly soon!

Apple. Result?

Biggest quarterly profit ever by a Public company...18 billion dollars....75 million iphones sold in the quarter....142 Billion Dollars in cash.....gross profit margin of 40%...10 times increase in revenue over the last decade....worth 635 billion dollars....34,000 iphone 6's sold every hour....number one smartphone in China...a company started in 1984.

April will be the Apple reinvention of the watch.

All they need sort out is their Tax reputational damage which was the story today rather than the numbers.

Switch 10-25% of your TV Budget to online video. Who said that? Only global Agency Omnicom!

It brings a joy to my heart when I hear an Agency, like giant Omnicom, advising Clients to move 10% to 25% of TV Ad "dollars" to online video.

Here it is in The WSJ if you want to read it in full (not that you wouldn't believe me....)
http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2014/10/06/omnicom-advises-marketers-to-move-10-to-25-of-tv-ad-dollars-to-online-video/?mg=blogs-wsj

Omnicom handles about 54 Billion usd in ad spend for clients like Visa, Apple, Pepsi, McDonald's and are in Dublin as Irish International and Cawley Nea as well as, media specialist OMD.

Not just that, their CEO Daryl Simm says "If you're trying to reach against light TV viewers, the answer is to move a significant amount of the video budget to online video". And he goes on, "There is more talent....entering the online video space. That holds a lot of promise for the online video space".

Of course too, he rightly points out that it's a move or a response to more measured advertising. Digital gets results that are deeply measured. Accountability.

And when you get advisors of this calibre, global advisors, encouraging the switch away from traditional TV, that's more great news for online. Pretty rubbish news for TV broadcasters.

Streamabout too are seeing this explosion to online video in Ireland practically daily. October will be their best month on record after three years beating their last best month - September.

I'm going home to have a beer now. Might have 2.
And say cheers to Daryl Simm.

Joan Rivers is alive and promoting the Iphone 6?

The problem with sponsored and pre-scheduled Social Media posts or Tweets, is that you need to keep an eye on them.

The much heralded Apple Iphone 6/U2 Album launch of last week, had sponsored, scheduled posts as part of its marketing drive.

One, from none other, than Joan Rivers.

The late, departed Joan Rivers that is. In fact, late, departed two weeks before the launch.

But that didn't stop her because on the day, she said she thought it was a 'great product". Indeed.

Prompting of course, a response. You get the picture.
Bad Apple.

Love this go at Apple by Samsung. Simple.

Love this go at Apple by Samsung.

Nice strong simple idea, little need for major production extravaganza or of spend. But good to have a go and good to get out next day using online video.

Makes you smile.

BskyB responding to the decline in Cable TV through new digital offerings.

The problems with 'cord cutters' and the collapsing of pay TV (cable TV) has not gone unnoticed at BSKYB according to The Telegraph.

They are preparing a major overhaul of their service and their set-top boxes to allow customers access to any programme on any device. They are also looking at Sky+, using the cloud (rather than the local box drive) to store programmes allowing greater accessibility.

The multi-screen technology will also allow greater advertising opportunities possibly targeting customers by post code. Direct selling.

They also plan to introduce 4K (very high definition programming) and a 'film to own' service.

Of course, Sky aren't the only ones bringing Television across many devices with Google and Amazon already in the market and Netflix is signing deals. Traditional TV will become just a part of their subscription service (funny how it used to be the other way around!). Apple of course, are there too.

But good to see traditional TV broadcasting embracing digital and getting into the space rather than usually, running from it. Sky, at least, are responding.

The only downside to the story is that it's "a year or two away" which is a long time in politics as they say - but a generational time in digital. They'll need to move faster, but at least, they're moving.

Superbowl Sunday. And the greatest commercial of them all. Ever.

Superbowl Sunday. The annual feast of new specially created TV Commercials.
A time to remember the greatest of them all and I was reminded of this one by a post by Ultan Bannon on LinkedIn.

Chiat Day's, Ridley Scott's '1984' Apple Mac commercial. It actually annoyed George Orwell's family so much for copyright, they went legal with a 'cease and desist letter'.

Apple sales increased by 50% in the days after it aired in the third quarter on Jan 22, 1984. Hated by the Apple Board, it was pushed through by Steve Jobs and Woz. Woz even offered to pay half of the airtime costs.

It flagged the introduction of the Mac on Jan 24 that year.

The greatest of them all? Yep, for sure.

US Digital Album Sales down 6% for the first time since ITunes. Why?

For the first time since Apple opened its Itunes music store in 2003, US digital music sales have fallen last year. Interesting data from the reputable Financial Times.

Why?

They've dropped by about -6%, and downloads account for about 70% of that market (which shows you how much record shops have suffered) to well over a billion units. Of which Apple now controls about 70%.

The reason why is streaming - music rental.

Itunes Radio is one reason where people hear songs in a radio playlist supported by advertising. So if they switch to Itunes Radio, they are less likely to buy from ITunes.

Might be a case of shooting yourself in the foot? We will see.

Spotify also people to choose the songs they want to hear for a monthly fee. Deezer similarly.

Monthly fees might stabilise the market but it will defeat downloads. I don't necessarily need to buy the song, just listen to it.

But artists and music company revenue is worse in monthly streaming.... generating licence fees of circa 7,000 usd which is equivalent to about 12,000 bought downloads. Only. Beyonce's latest album had about 830,000 downloads in three days.

And of course, there's the monthly free streaming options out there which don't generate hard core revenue but rather a share in advertising. Worse again if you're a record label.

It's a sea change in the manner in which music is distributed and hence the impact on downloads. Will people want to just rent an album rather than buy it? If they do, there's a long hard road ahead.

However, it's hard to feel sorry for record labels. They spent years fighting it instead of embracing it and now find themselves dictated to by the market.

For once.

It's its Birthday so how old do you think the Iphone is?

In fact it's 7 years old.

Steve Jobs presented his great new idea for the phone market and everybody thought, What? A phone?

And it brought the whole concept of touchscreen, firmly to the market.

Today it accounts for over half of Apple's total revenue with about 450 million units sold. Of course, the revenue isn't just in the expensive handsets but rather in the applications through ITunes, App Store sales and so on.

The Apple Store alone, generated 10 Billion usd in 2013 with over 50 BILLION Apps being downloaded since the start. 50 Billion!

The Iphone 5S by the way, is 20% lighter than the original Iphone but 40 times faster.

The Iphone now makes more money than all of Disney and all of Coca-Cola. It makes more money than all of Microsoft!

It's pretty impressive for a 7 year old idea don't you think?
And a helluva tribute to Steve Jobs.

Ipad Air. The launch and now the Ad. Pretty good it is too.

Have to say, having blogged on Wednesday about the launch of The IPad Air, I hadn't seen the new TV Commercial and it's actually pretty good.

With a voice-over by Bryan Cranston, the actor of the hour from 'Breaking Bad', it compares it to a pencil. Nice idea in there.

It also reflects the Apple ethos which goes back to the "Crazy ones" commercial where it's not about the product, but what you can do with it.

Instilling dreamy thoughts of exploring, science, discovery, writing and so on - the benefits - it's exactly as all good advertising should. It's not what it is, but what you can do with it.

"It's an extremely simple tool" says Cranston and an extremely simple piece of advertising. As all the best ones are.

I presume the Agency is TBWA but it has Wieden Kennedy written all over it. Have they started an advertising trend?

Whatever about the Ipad Air, this advertising will sell it.
