What we're listening to: Sheryl Crow 'Tuesday Night Music Club'

The Album of many covers because this is not how I remember it...Anyway.

Sheryl Crow 1993 debut but she was well known before then. From Missouri, she was not just a majorette, a beauty queen, but a star "hurdler' in athletics (if that's what you call someone who jumps over hurdles....)

A music teacher too, who toured as backing vocals with Michael Jackson during his 'Bad' Tour. But she also worked with Don Henley and Stevie Wonder never mind writing advertising jingles. Busy, busy.

The James Bond theme, "Tomorrow never dies" is hers. I know you didn't know that.

This debut comes from a musician's "collective" she attended, called 'The Tuesday Night Music Club' and of course, got lots of attention from the single "All I wanna do" and "Leaving Las Vegas". 3 Grammies helped too.

She dated Clapton, Owen Wilson, Lance Armstrong and has played with everyone,. She's a walking "who's-who" of music and very well regarded.

This is country at the core - but pop country. It's a happy record and a strong one. Definitely an interesting listen.

What we're listening to: Dwight Yoakam 'Gone'.

Now we know, this mightn't be for everyone but as we always say, keep those ears open! You just never know if you give music a listen.

This is honky-tonk hillbilly country. It's shootin', fishin' country of the old Buck Owens, Johnny Cash type, but revisited.

1995 and Dwight's 6th Album with the excellent "Heart of Stone", "That'll be me" and "Sorry you asked" as the standout singles.

He's from Kentucky but raised in Ohio and probably produces the best Albums covers anywhere. The man has stetson style although he toured with Stevie Earle and Lucinda Williams which are more "new" country.

And he sells biscuits. 'Bakersfield Biscuits' is the brand.

It's great stuff and don't ignore it.

Something different but then, something good always is.

Interesting Video but the song actually starts at 1.49.

What we're listening to: Deep Purple 'In Rock'

A truly great record from a Band at the height of their powers in 1970 (they formed in 1968). You'll also find their 1972 'Machine Head' Album on this blog by searching top left.

The name 'Deep Purple' was suggested by Ritchie Blackmore from his grandmother's favourite song. Betcha' didn't know that...

This was what's called the 'Mark 2' line up with the incredible Gillan on vocals, Blackmore, Glover, the wonderful Jon Lord and Ian Paice (paicey) on drums. In fact there's few bands where the drummer is so much a part of it and Purple was definitely one of them.

Recorded in London with a Mount Rushmore cover (carved 'in rock' geddit?), this is hard-driving real Rock pure and simple.

"Child in Time" is the standout track (developed by Jon Lord who died in 2011, developed from another Band's song called "Bombay Calling" and you can hear his organ playing as the intro) that made this Album their real breakthrough. And, if there was an Album worth having for one track alone, this is it.

'Bombay Calling' is below too - you can hear how close it is.....

"Speed King" you may also know and "Into the Fire".

There's remastered versions you should get, but don't be without this. One of the gems from the 1970's rock era.

Frankly, from the best band of that time.

And the 1969 'Bombay Calling' to compare.

What we're listening to: Police 'Reggatta de Blanc'

Their second Album after 'Outlandos d'Amour' (which you can search here top left), from 1979.

The big singles here were of course "walking on the moon" and "message in a bottle" and they brought the Album to their first number one in the UK.

"Bring on the night", "beds too big without you" and "does everyone stare" are standout tracks too and it was recorded over 4 weeks in a "free wheel" style. They wrote and recorded as they went so it highlights the prolific songwriting of Sting.

A three piece who fitted in the punky/new wave genre of the time but they became more mainstream.

This is really worth it.
A milestone record for what was, a transformational band.

What we're listening to: Dylan 'Freewheelin"

You'll know from reading this Blog that we're not huge Dylan fans. Although 'Desire', 'Budokan' and 'Street Legal' Albums have all appeared here. Maybe we're closet fans.

But this went on in Streamabout during the week and funny enough, a lot of singing along. "Blowin in the wind", "Hard rain", "Don't think twice" and so on.

1963 it was and Zimmerman's second Album but a political album really of typical Dylan uncluttered songs and melodies. It was the record that made him famous and Van Morrison often talks about the influence of it, on him. Lots do.

Recorded at Studio A in NYC, under Albert Grossman's management (controversially later), it's very folky in a Joan Baez/Pete Seeger way but then, they were the times. The original pressing on vinyl is considered the rarest (and valuable) record in America today. It's held in that high a regard.

The cover shot is Dylan with girlfriend Suze Rotolo pictured in the West Village (where they lived).

It's a must-have. A critical Album at a critical time.

Like him or not.

What we're listening to: Steve Winwood 'Arc of a Diver'

Well, he's on tour at the mo with Steely Dan so we thought time to put this on!

Stevies 2nd solo album from 1980 and what's interesting about it, is that all the instruments are played by him and recorded at his own studio. It was the record that really got him attention with the single, 'While you see a chance'

Winwood came from Bermingham UK via 'The Spencer Davis Group' you might know "Keep on Running" from 1965), 'Blind Faith' (Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton) and 'Traffic'

But bet you didn't know he played organ on Hendrix's infamous 'Electric Ladyland' Album too. He also toured with Rod Stewart and Tom Petty.

So the man knows what he's doing.

This is rock, but soft rock and easy listening.
Great tunes, great vocalist, check it out.

What we're listening to: Jamiroquai 'Travelling without Moving'

Jamiroquai, is in essence Jason 'Jay' Kay who formed the band in 1992 as a jazzy funk disco vibe. Their first Albums 'Emergency on Planet Earth' and 'Return of The Space Cowboy' were huge sellers largely through the "new" sound of the band but particularly with very imaginative MTV videos.

It's almost Disco, but it isn't. Acid Jazz it's often called but I dunno, more funky grooves (if you need a box to put it in).

'Travelling without music' was their third Album in 1996 and the 'Virtual Insanity' single really broke through, from this Album. Also too, 'Cosmic Girl' and it is, the best-selling "funk" Album in history.

The Ferrari-esque logo on the cover, is symbolic of Jay Kay's love of cars.

They were the 3rd biggest selling band in the UK in the 90's after Oasis and The Spice Girls....and their last Album was 'Automaton' in 2017.

Look at this video first - it's excellent - super song but a really simple video idea. And then 'Cosmic Girl' so you'll see the car references.

Great stuff. Definitely one to get those feet going.
Has to be in any collection.

What we're listening to: Eels 'Meet The Eels'

Here's one you mightn't know and in lots of ways, the real Eels Album to include is this 1996 one 'Beautiful Freak' which perhaps, is the best Album cover in years.

But the 2008 'Meet The Eels' is a great introduction. From California, Eels are centred around Mark Everett (called 'E' geddit?). Now it's not for everyone..... but really different with some classic tracks. You can hear the almost the punky 'Talking Heads' approach on 'Susans House' but then, it's not really.

Weird, Very hard to box off, but in a good way.

Killer Tracks 'Novacaine', 'Susans House' and the great, 'Beautiful Day' (alone worth the Album in itself, first song shown below, it's a classic).

They didn't do well in the mainstream but that said, have a huge cult following and because they're "different" you can take it or leave it. But give it a listen. Keep those ears open always!

In Streamabout these three songs to go on ALL the time. So have a go!

What we're listening to: Curtis Mayfield 'Superfly'

Curtis Mayfield was from Chicago and originally known as leading 'The Impressions' which you'll know from their all-time great song, 'People get Ready' (and btw, Rod Stewart does an excellent version).

Very much a voice of the black civil rights movement with people like James Brown, Marvin Gaye and Sly Stone - of that time.

He went solo in 1970 with the debut Album 'Curtis' often compared to Marvin's 'What's goin on' (which you can search on this blog top left).

But it was this 1972 'Superfly' record that broke him through and was the soundtrack to a blaxploitation movie of the same name (in a 'Shaft' kinda way).

So it's very ghetto, poverty, drug abuse and notably the track 'Pusherman' and 'Freddies Dead'. It is a classic, no doubt. Funky grooves with soul, Disco in part.

He tragically became paralysed in 1990 following a concert accident and died in 1999.

Have to include this greatness song here - People Get Ready - and then two tracks from the Album.

What we're listening to: Bowie 'Ziggy Stardust'

When you're talking about Bowie, you have to try and keep it short. No musician has achieved and done so much, as he. His Wikipedia is the longest we've seen for any musician we've covered on this blog. And that's a lot.

From Brixton, born as Davy Jones in South London (he died of liver cancer in 2016 at 69), confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, made him change his name to Bowie (yes, after the Bowie knife).

He studied art and remained a painter all his life as well as an actor and a huge belief in God (starting as a Buddhist).

'Space Oddity' was his first single of note, released days before the Apollo 11 mission. In 1972 he became the alter-ego Ziggy Stardust (a Lou Reed/Iggy Pop inspired mix - "Ziggy" is a version of "Iggy") and a fundamental part of the Glam Rock movement (T Rex, Slade, Sweet) at that time.

In fact he played in the T Rex band and Lou Reed's 'Transformer' Album as backing vocals/keyboards/guitar and co-produced it with Mick Ronson.

His subsequent band, 'The Spiders from Mars' included the great Mick Ronson and launched in 1972 with this, his 5th Album followed.

'Starman' as the single generating huge attention following an infamous performance (I swear) on Top of the Pops. 'Suffragette City' is also here and so too, Rick Wakeman on keyboards.

In 1973 he stopped touring and there's a great movie of his final Ziggy gig at The Hammersmith Odeon.

This concept Album was recorded almost back-to-back with his 4th, 'Hunky Dory' in London.

Later came 'Jean Genie', 'Life on Mars', the sensational 'Rebel Rebel' (great version on 'David Live' btw), 'Young Americans', 'Golden Years', 'Heroes', 'Aladdin Sane'...and you could go on and on.

One of the greats and this Album defined Bowie.
It defined in fact, a generation.

What we're listening to: Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook

Alright it's a Greatest Hits Album (okay, okay) but that allows us time to talk about Norman Cook

This Fatboy Slim album has all the songs you know - "Rockafeller Skank", "Praise you", "Weapon of choice", Groove Armada's "I see you baby", "Right here Right now" and "Brimful of Asha"

In fact, if you want to know just how good Norman Cook is, listen to the original Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha", a slow and kinda dreary song. You'll hear it in a sec.

Then listen to Cook's remix straight after it, to bring it a whole new transformed, upbeat remix. He turns a song....

Have a listen now, one after the other.

See?

The cover design of this 'Why try harder' Album comes of course, from the infamous Fatboy Slim "You've come a long way baby" 1998 (yep, 20 years ago).

Cook of course, came via Hull's 'The Housemartins' (you'll know 'Caravan of Love' probably) and other bands/guises, but then via the excellent 'Freak Power'

Both Freak Power Albums by the way (Drive thru booty 1994 and More of everything 1996) are really well worth checking out. Superbly so. He became Fatboy Slim after that in 1996.

Cook also (a man of many talents I'm telling you) possibly created one of the best ever music videos with Christopher Walken for Weapons of Choice, here...

And he created probably the best known Video of all time for 'Praise you".
It's here....

And here is, Right Here Right Now.

Enough said?

So Streamabout's advice is to have another look at Norman Cook.

It will cheer you up.
