What we're listening to: Bowie 'Ziggy Stardust'

When you're talking about Bowie, you have to try and keep it short. No musician has achieved and done so much, as he. His Wikipedia is the longest we've seen for any musician we've covered on this blog. And that's a lot.

From Brixton, born as Davy Jones in South London (he died of liver cancer in 2016 at 69), confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, made him change his name to Bowie (yes, after the Bowie knife).

He studied art and remained a painter all his life as well as an actor and a huge belief in God (starting as a Buddhist).

'Space Oddity' was his first single of note, released days before the Apollo 11 mission. In 1972 he became the alter-ego Ziggy Stardust (a Lou Reed/Iggy Pop inspired mix - "Ziggy" is a version of "Iggy") and a fundamental part of the Glam Rock movement (T Rex, Slade, Sweet) at that time.

In fact he played in the T Rex band and Lou Reed's 'Transformer' Album as backing vocals/keyboards/guitar and co-produced it with Mick Ronson.

His subsequent band, 'The Spiders from Mars' included the great Mick Ronson and launched in 1972 with this, his 5th Album followed.

'Starman' as the single generating huge attention following an infamous performance (I swear) on Top of the Pops. 'Suffragette City' is also here and so too, Rick Wakeman on keyboards.

In 1973 he stopped touring and there's a great movie of his final Ziggy gig at The Hammersmith Odeon.

This concept Album was recorded almost back-to-back with his 4th, 'Hunky Dory' in London.

Later came 'Jean Genie', 'Life on Mars', the sensational 'Rebel Rebel' (great version on 'David Live' btw), 'Young Americans', 'Golden Years', 'Heroes', 'Aladdin Sane'...and you could go on and on.

One of the greats and this Album defined Bowie.
It defined in fact, a generation.

It's not a choice, it's a "must have".
