What we're listening to: The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper'

Karl Marx, Sonny Liston, Bob Dylan...they're all on the Peter Blake/Jann Haworth Grammy winning Album cover, now celebrating 50 years. 

57 Photos and 9 waxworks.....McCartney was 24 at the time, Lennon 26.

Released in 1967 (obviously if it's 50 years ago), it was The Beatles 8th Album and it immediately went huge (4 Grammys). An early concept Album using 'Sgt Peppers' as an Edwardian alter-ego Band.

It's The Rolling Stone number one Album of all time and a huge all-time seller (32 million + copies) and actually inspired, in no small part, by Zappa's 1966 Debut, 'Freak out!' which might surprise you. It surprised me!

Recorded on a four-track at Studio 2, Abbey Road with George Martin, the 38 minute track listing is unbelievable. It is to re-released digitally this month (?) too by Giles Martin (son of George).  

Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help from my friends, Lucy in the Sky, Getting Better, Lovely Rita, Good morning Good morning, She's Leaving Home, When I'm 64, A Day in the Life, etc etc....extraordinary stuff. 

So much has been written about this record and you'll hear more because of the anniversary on June 1st, I won't add to it. You just have to have it. End of. 

It's getting better all the time...I have to admit.

What we're listening to: Tom Petty 'Damn the Torpedoes'

Of course, Florida's Tom Petty has to get a look in here given that 'Breakdown' is one of the all time classic tracks. And he is iconically American Rock gentry.

1979's 'Damn the torpedoes' was his 3rd Album (the Band formed in 76) and went three times Platinum. The title is a quote from an American Admiral by the way and this record was the Tom Petty breakthrough recording.

'Refugee' and 'Don't do me like that' were the singles but 'Here comes my girl' you'll probably know too. It's all very much in the Bob Seger or Springsteen vein and really worth the listen. 

Mind you, if you ask me, Petty's 2 best tracks are 'Breakdown' and 'Mary's last Dance' which are not on this record.

The Band is still going (their last Album was 2014) but this is a great throwback listen. It deserves the critical and sales acclaim.

Put it on and put it in the collection.

What we're listening to: World Party 'Bang'

World Party is a British Group (London) based around largely Kurt Wallinger (who wrote all of these tracks). He had been with 'The Waterboys' before starting World Party. A bizarre name we think anyway but don't let that put you off.  

Previous records were really his solo efforts whereas 'Bang' was a trio group. This was his/their 3rd Album in 1993 and their 2nd, 'Goodbye Jumbo' got a lot of acclaim, rightly so. Recommended too. 

It's very poppy but that's great for a sunnier Summer. They supported 'Steely Dan' on tour at one stage, so you get the picture.

You'll know 'Is it Like today?' which was the single. But all the tracks are terrific especially when it opens on 'Kingdom Come'. 'What is love all about', 'Sooner or later', 'Sunshine' - great stuff. 

One Band and Album you might not know, so good to have a go! These two tracks will give you sense. 

Roll back the convertible and hit that road.

What we're listening to: Eric Clapton 'Slowhand'

We admit it - we're not great fans of Eric but that said, '461 Ocean Boulevard' (the address where he recuperated from drug issues) already featured on our list.

'Slowhand', was Clapton's 1977 Album (from his nickname) and most successful. 

Of course, the singles 'Wonderful Tonight' (which we do not want to hear again ever, nor, 'Lady in Red') drove it - as did 'Lay Down Sally'. There's no criticising 'Lay Down Sally' or JJ Cale's 'Cocaine', or the excellent John Martyn cover, 'May you never' which appear here and give the Album a bluesy rock feel. 

Great summery tracks.

A 2012 Deluxe edition to celebrate 35 years of the record also includes the old stalwarts; Bob Dylan's 'Knocking on Heaven's Door', 'Badge', 'Layla', 'Further on up the road' (see the video from The Last Waltz here in the Joni Mitchell 'Blue' Blog, superb that it is), and Bob Marley's 'I shot the sheriff'. Well worth getting.

Yvonne Elliman featured on backing vocals (The Bee Gees wrote 'How Deep is your love' for her) as she did on a lot of Clapton records and Glyn Johns Produced (who did some amazing records too. Unbelievable career). 

Clapton is 2nd in Rolling Stone's Greatest Guitarists ever (who was first? Hendrix) and is a recovering Heroin addict/alcoholic. 

At the time of 'Slowhand', it was said that they were stoned mostly when recording it. Not sure what that says...except get it. Another great record.

What we're listening to: John Mayer 'Room for Squares'

It was really John Mayer's recent Album release, 'The Search for Everything' which reminded us to put on 'Room for Squares', his debut of 2001. By the way, it's early days but 'The Search for Everything' sounds excellent too, so far.

'Room for Squares' is his best-selling Album and Grammy winner.

There's some really standout tracks (which he wrote) such as 'Your Body is a Wonderland', 'Why Georgia', 'My Stupid Mouth' and '83' but it's really a terrific record. 'St Patricks Day' is there too.

Hard to box off John Mayer too, not that it matters, but it's a fairly eclectic mix. You don't know if he's pop, rock, jazz, blues.....there's even some country in there - but it's 'feel good' for sure. His great influence was Stevie Ray (and the great Rory Gallagher) and no more you can say.

This is a very, very talented man. He's collaborated with Buddy Guy, Albert King, Clapton, BB King, Grateful Dead, so that might help you. Often compared to Dave Matthews and in a way, that makes sense. 

He tours this Summer and although not on this Album, he does a great version of Tom Petty's 'Free Fallin' as below. What possibly does him harm is is tabloid relationship's with Jessica Simpson, Taylor Swift (note her song 'Dear John'), Jennifer Aniston et al, but unfairly. His naff videos don't help it either.

But get over all that, watch 'Free Fallin' and listen to 'Body is a Wonderland' and get this Record. Trust me, trust us, we know good music in Streamabout.

What we're listening to: Ry Cooder 'Bop till you drop'

Ry Cooder has long been a doyenne of the music business. The musicians, musician and particularly, for slide guitar (8th on Rolling Stones 100 best guitarists ever). 6 Grammy winner.

He's collaborated with everyone from Van to The Doobies and actually played on The Stones 'Sticky Fingers', Van's 'Into the Music' and lots, lots more. 

You'll possibly know him best from the Cuban 'Buena Vista Social Club' in 1997.

This was his 8th Album from 1979 and features Tex-Mex blues, rock songs like Presley's 1960's 'Little Sister' which became the best known track on the record and which opens the record. It's light blues but technically great. 

"The very thing that makes you rich" is almost an old negro spiritual and "I think it's going to work out fine" a soft, laid back song. The session people playing on the record is a "who's who" as you'd expect from Cooder, including Jim Keltner Drums, David Lindley Guitar and even, Chaka Khan.

It was critically, a huge Album for Ry Cooder but not a commercial enough sound, to chart very well. You get a sense that this would not concern Mr. Cooder. He just wants to make great music and this is, a great record.

What we're listening to: Jon and Vangelis 'Friends of Mr. Cairo'

1981 and you will know Jon Anderson (from Yes) incredible vocalist that he is. Vangelis is the Greek electronic composer ('Chariots of Fire' soundtrack) who nearly replaced Rick Wakeman on keyboards in 'Yes'. 

They had started their collaboration in 1980 with an Album called 'Short Stories' and it ended in 1998, but the 'Friends of Mr. Cairo' is their most known and best, collaboration. Really excellent Album.

Anderson wrote the lyrics here and Vangelis, the music. 

The Album includes references to old film noir movies - Mr. Cairo is Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre) from 'The Maltese Falcon' - and you'll hear references to Bogart, the fabulous Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Jimmy Stewart. It opens with the screech of tyres from a getaway and gun shots.....so early sampling going on here!

The single was 'The Friends of Mr. Cairo' and you'll know 'State of Independence' more probably from the Donna Summer cover. 'Outside of this' and 'I'll find my way home' (on the extended version) are superb.

Carol Kenyon (played with Van, Pink Floyd) is here too on backing vocals but as you'd expect, the record is produced incredibly well. Especially for 1981!

The 'Friends of Mr. Cairo' did not reach huge sales success at all. Number 8 in Austria, 35 in Sweden (!) so all that shows is that there's no accounting for taste. The Streamabout crew marvelled at it. 

Don't know about you, but we could listen to Jon Anderson forever....have a listen to get a sense.

What we're listening to: Mary Chapin 'Come on Come on'

A long, long way from last week's Frank Zappa for sure (!), but something new that you might not have come across. 

A really, really great "country" Album but more folky if "country" puts you off. "New Country" call it and rightly, Carpenters most successful Album (quadruple platinum). She's a 5 time Grammy winner too.

So whatever pigeon-hole you want to put it in, put it in the "really good Album" one. 

It's her fourth Album from 1992 and you might remember the single "I feel lucky" from it and perhaps "Passionate Kisses" (Lucinda Williams cover). 

Perhaps too, the better known tracks are "Come on Come on", the disturbingly true "He thinks he'll keep her", the uplifting "I take my chances" but there's 2 really superb, all-time great songs here. 

"I am a town" just sums up the typical sleepy US town just off the highway ("I'm the last gas for an hour if you're going 25....") and "Only a dream" is a great story about her sister. These two are linked below and frankly, as beautiful as you can get. 

Rosanne Cash features on the record, as does Shawn Colvin, The Indigo Girls and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, on Organ. John Jennings her long time collaborator of course, is fundamental to the record too.

Mary is a cousin (and not a daughter as many believe) of songwriter Harry Chapin, from New Jersey. She's actually touring this year and a fine live performer (having seen her three times). 

In fact, if memory serves me right, I think I saw her as she supported Nanci Griffith at one stage as she started out (?). Might be wrong but think so. Answers on a postcard. 

This is definitely, absolutely, an Album to have and to cherish. You'll love it whether you're a country fan or not. You only have to be a fan of really good music.

What we're listening to: Frank Zappa 'Joe's Garage'

We've blogged about Frank Zappa's excellent 'Overnite Sensation' Album before and indeed, his 'Apostrophe' Album is also considered among his best work by most.

'Joe's Garage' for us anyway, is another classic.

For some people Zappa is seen as almost 'comedy' and 'sexually vulgar' but that's not to understand the genius that he was. And this record shows that genius so don't let pre-conceptions get in the way of great music. Never.

From 1979, this tells the story as to how the Government was killing/censoring music (remember those 'Explicit Lyrics' stickers?) through the voice of a character called 'The Central Scrutinizer'. It's the story of Joe, forming a garage rock band and it's often referred to as a "Rock Opera'.

"Catholic Girls", rude as it is, criticises the Church (and Scientology later). "Crew Slut" is, as it says (!), about groupies. "Wet T Shirt night" is what it says and the opener, "Joe's Garage" sets the scene. "Lucille has messed up my mind" is almost Doobie-ish (you'll hear it on the link below). But they're excellent tracks. Trust me.

"Watermelon in Easter Hay" (on the extended box set) is considered Zappa's masterpiece and greatest guitar solo. It's really lovely and Zappa himself, thought it was his best song.

Funny enough too, most people see Zappa as being part of a drug culture. He wasn't, he never did drugs and wouldn't allow drug users into his band - rather, it was booze - and he started as a Classical musician (!). There you go. Pre-conceptions. 

'Rolling Stone' have him at number 22 from the top 100 guitarists of all time. 

Now it does take a bit of getting used to but Zappa will repay it. It's really excellent and if you're looking for something you haven't heard before, start here.

He died in 1993.

What we're listening to: Joni 'Blue'

I'll be honest, I don't get this but it has to be said, everyone else does. There's little doubt 1971's 'Blue', is considered one of the greatest Albums of all time and without doubt, amongst the females in Streamabout (Sarah notably). Overplayed comes to mind.

That's not to detract from it for one second. But you need to be in the mood for it too, in my view. 

I do get Joni to a point - Coyote ('Prisoner of the white lines') is one of the best tracks ever and stands out on The Last Waltz - 

(Until, that is, Robbie Robertson and Clapton go at it on 'Further on up the Road'.....)

But enough of that. 

Joni is actually born Anderson (not Mitchell, she married Chuck Mitchell at 21) and Canadian (not American). 

She dated Graham Nash (CSNY) and it was that break-up, then taking up with James Taylor (she sings backing vocals btw on 'You've got a friend'), then they broke up too....that was the birth of 'Blue', her fourth Album.

She met Taylor on the set of his movie 'Two Lane Blacktop'.

'Blue' is considered by all, to be a great all-time record and 'California' is probably the best known track, all tracks written by Mitchell.

Stephen Stills and James Taylor feature on the Album as does Russ Kunkel, a famed US drummer. Tim Considine did the iconic cover shot. 

Probably what makes it great, is that it's totally honest and it may be, the ultimate break-up Album. All you need do, is listen to the title track to hear that. But here's 'California' to give you, I think, a better sense of it all....

What we're listening to: Steve Gibbons 'Caught in The Act'

So there I was, sitting in school, with Adam Clayton watching an afternoon-ish show - which I think was called 'Rockpalast' or 'Ready Steady Go', something like that. 

Basically live rock performances, not unlike The Whistle Test because Adam's band (U2) were making a debut performance the following week and he wanted to see what the show was like. 

So it must have been 1977 because as we watched, up came Steve Gibbons with this record and simply, it blew everyone away. Live from The Whiskey in LA.

This is pure Rock and Roll in the Chuck Berry type. One of the best singles ever recorded, 'Tulane' is from this Album and in fact, a Chuck Berry song. It is blistering. Worth having the Album alone for just this and the Streamabout crew danced it off. It's hard not to. 

'Watching the river flow' a Bob Dylan song (and he now has a whole set dedicated to Dylan) opens the Album and here too is a great cover of 'Day Tripper' (Beatles, like you didn't know). Standout tracks are 'Git It' and 'He gave his life to rock and roll'.

Definitely a record to crank the sound up on and I was delighted to see that Steve Gibbons is still around and gigging. He's English and one of the real Rockers in a Dr. Feelgood kinda' way. 

This is a great Album, no less and get ready, because here it comes....turn it up!

What we're listening to: Elton John 'Tumbleweed Connection'

This is our 3rd part in a series of Elton John Albums including 'Madman' 1971, 'Honky Chateau' 1972 and this, 'Tumbleweed Connection' from 1970 which started a remarkable run of great Albums in succession.

You'll now find them all here on this Blog but a with a special mention for 'Madman across the water', one of the great all-time records.

Tumbleweed was his 3rd Album and represents the fascination that John and Bernie Taupin had with the Old West. Americana and Westerns.

It was recorded in London and the cover pic is a Railway Station in 'Hosted Keynes' (yeah, me neither) of all places (Sussex) and that's Elton seated (Bernie was on the back cover). 

'Burn down the Mission' is perhaps the best known tune but 'Country Comfort', 'My Fathers Gun' (Streamabout's top track), 'Come down in time' and 'Where to now St. Peter?' all get a worthy mention but then, 'Amoreena' too and all that says is that all the tracks are actually, standout.

What's interesting is to see Dave Glover (Slade) and Roger Pope (Popey) playing here with Lesley Duncan (the infamous voice on Floyd's 'Dark Side') and Caleb Quaye (Hall & Oates) but all forming the core of the Elton John Band and sound. It was the start of it really.....with Dee Murray, Paul Buckmaster, Nigel Olsson. Dusty Springfield also makes an appearance and of course, Gus Dudgeon produces.

It's really some line-up supporting great John/Taupin songwriting. 

EJ hadn't broken the US at this stage so this Album was really considered after he did and not so much at the time. But extraordinary is certainly is and starting that 3 Album line-up that's really highly creative output.

You need all 3 for a hat trick. Get them...ALL.

What we're listening to: Elton John 'Honky Chateau'

There were 3 extraordinary Albums from Elton John and Mr. Taupin that appeared one after the other. Tumbleweed Connection 1970, Madman 1971 (his greatest record and already covered in this blog) and this Honky Chateau Album from 1972.

There were others, 'Yellow Brick Road' (ranked best EJ Album by Rolling Stone Readers Poll, Madman ranked 2, Tumbleweed ranked 4, Honky Chateau ranked 5), 'Don't Shoot me' and 'Captain Fantastic' spring to mind too.

Recent listeners think of Elton John from "I'm still standing" and The Lion King. Don't. He is such an extraordinary talent and Bernie Taupin such a terrific writer, you miss a lot if you "discard" him. 

'Madman' in fact, is one of the greatest Albums of all time and Honky Chateau doesn't come far behind.

Simply, there is no award in the music business that this man hasn't won times over.

Born Reg Dwight, he started collaborating with Bernie in 1967, aged 20 although he had formed a Band 'Bluesology' in 1962. 

Taupin famously wrote the lyrics on his own in one room handed them to Reg who then wrote the music in another.

Backed (and in the writers view, importantly backed) by Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray (ex Spencer Davis Group) of course Davey Johnstone/Gus Dudgeon later too, it was the infamous LA Troubadour gig in 1970 (and there's a great doc about that which you should watch) which broke him into the US. 

Recently I watched 'The Eagles' story documentary and Glenn Frey said he was at that gig and noted that it was the pivotal musical moment that changed him.

Honky Chateau was his first US Number One record and his 5th Album.

The name came from where it was recorded, in a French Chateau.

'Rocket Man' of course is the best known track here but from the bluesy opening of 'Honky Cat' it just runs from magical song to magical song. The whole band is here - Davey, Dee, Gus (producing) and Nigel. 

You will not be anything but knocked over by this and the three Elton Albums should be in everyone's collection. Really. Next week we'll do Tumbleweed Connection too, so you'll have a view on all three. The man is a genius. 

Ah, the memories of this.....she packed my bags last night.
