What we're listening to. Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue'

Miles Davis, trumpeter and jazz legend.

We were thinking that 'Sketches of Spain' (1960) might be his best Album but 'Kind of Blue' (1959) is the one that's most regarded. In fact, it's regarded by many as the best Jazz record ever. It is probably the best-selling Jazz record of all time!

From Illinois, he came to real prominence in 1957 with the 'Round Midnight' Album featuring John Coltrane.

He's played with everyone you like to think of in Jazz - Gil Evans, Duke Ellington, the likes of Charlie Parker, Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and Mingus and considered to be amongst the greatest. A troubled early life to Heroin, Coke, Alcohol, Women, is all spelt out in his honest biography. Well worth a read if you want a sense of that jazz scene.

Miles died in 1991 at 65.

'Kind of Blue' was record in NYC with Bill Evans, John Coltrane and others. "So What", "Freddie Freeloader", "Blue in Green" and "Flamenco Sketches" are gems and everything was recorded in freestyle with no preparation. The way Jazz should be.

There's not a lot else to say. It's an incredible piece of work.

A piece of music history. Just listen to the opening and you get a sense of the genius.
