What we're listening to: Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook

Alright it's a Greatest Hits Album (okay, okay) but that allows us time to talk about Norman Cook. 

This Fatboy Slim album has all the songs you know - "Rockafeller Skank", "Praise you", "Weapon of choice", Groove Armada's "I see you baby", "Right here Right now" and "Brimful of Asha". 

In fact, if you want to know just how good Norman Cook is, listen to the original Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha", a slow and kinda dreary song. You'll hear it in a sec.

Then listen to Cook's remix straight after it, to bring it a whole new transformed, upbeat remix. He turns a song....

The cover design of this 'Why try harder' Album comes of course, from the infamous Fatboy Slim "You've come a long way baby" 1998 (yep, 20 years ago).

Cook of course, came via Hull's 'The Housemartins' (you'll know 'Caravan of Love' probably) and other bands/guises, but then via the excellent 'Freak Power'. 

Both Freak Power Albums by the way (Drive thru booty 1994 and More of everything 1996) are really well worth checking out. Superbly so. He became Fatboy Slim after that in 1996.

Cook also (a man of many talents I'm telling you) possibly created one of the best ever music videos with Christopher Walken for Weapons of Choice, here...

And he created probably the best known Video of all time for 'Praise you".

What we're listening to: REM 'Automatic for the People'.

No I'll be honest, I don't get this...but...the people in Streamabout do and the 20 million who bought it do too. Fair enough.

It was REMs (Rapid Eye Movement seemingly) 8th Album from 1992. 

"Nightswimming" is here but of course, "Man on the moon", "Everybody hurts", "The sidewinder sleeps" and of course, "Drive". 

It's all about 'loss and mourning' (says vocalist Stipe) so don't expect Disco, but do expect deep meaningful stuff (Yeah, that's my cynicism).

Rolling Stone gave it 5 Stars, so there you go. Who can argue with them?

Led Zep's John Paul Jones appears on the record as does a stellar Production Crew. 

It's basically a no-brainer for a strong Album listing. 

Hugely loved too, so it reached into the souls of a lot of people. Just not mine. 

But we always say - keep the ears open and listen to everything.

What we're listening to: Coldplay 'Parachutes'

Their 2000 debut was well before they became the stadium band and it was a huge record. The cover is a pic of a globe taken with a £10 Kodak disposable camera and it has become iconic. In fact everyone seemed to have a copy of this Album no matter where you went. A shocking 18 years ago...

The singles were of course the overplayed, 'Yellow', 'Panic' and 'Don't Shiver' but the really excellent standout track for us is 'Spies'. 

Coldplay are a 4 piece and vocalist Chris Martin's rather public profile causes people to love them, or hate them. But there's no getting away from this Album as being magnificent - like them or not. It just is. 

It was a huge record and for good reason.

What we're listening to: Springsteen 'Hammersmith Odeon 75'

1975 and a Live Album featuring concerts in the UK to promote 'Born to Run'. 

But significant, in that this was his first foray into Europe and notably the UK. He was largely unheard of in mainstream terms at the time. The Hammersmith Odeon is an iconic London venue.

But he blew everyone away with nine encores. Yep, that's nine.
So this is the record that made Bruce in the UK and it created a storm. 

'Thunder Road' is here and so too songs you well know, like 'Tenth Avenue Freeze out', 'Born to Run', 'She's the One', 'Backstreets', 'Kittys Back' and so many others but what's inescapable is a real rock n roll moment in a superb version of 'Rosalita'.

If you ever want to see probably the greatest piece of Rock footage ever, look at the film of the gig and look here at 'Rosalita' where Bruce mixes it with Clarence Clemons. It's extraordinary. 

The Concert is available on DVD so get it. But get the record.

What we're listening to: Barry White 'Can't Get Enough'

Ah Barry White, the music to make love to (or so they said)....this 1974 release was the Texan's third record with the huge single "My first my last my everything" but the title track "Can't get enough of your love baby" is the standout.

Born Barry Carter, he dominated soul charts for years with a deep bass/baritone voice that won him 3 Grammys and many advertising voice overs. He spent time in jail and his brother was killed in a gang incident so an interesting upbringing. 

Backed by 'Love Unlimited Orchestra' a 40 piece, it was a unique sound and very much of that Funk/Disco era. Fabulous OTT Production. 

Being always overweight, he died at 58 undergoing a liver transplant in 2003.

Good Album for a different mood and probably someone you haven't listened to recently. It's worth it and give it a go.

What we're listening to: The Band 'Before the Flood'

Ah the days when you held up a lighter at gigs rather than now, mobile phone lights.....But this double 'Before the Flood' Album cover shows that this is a Concert recording 'live' from 1974 (actually Dylan's first live Album). 

You'll know The Band from Scorsese's 'The Last Waltz' and see the clips below.

Bod Dylan and The Band (who were his backing group of course) and this was from a joint tour. 

In effect it's The Band's 7th Album. Rick Danko (died in his sleep 1999), Richard Manuel (died 1986), Levon Helm (died 2012) with Garth Hudson and the great Robbie Robertson being the surviving members. 

So it's Dylanesque ('Lay Lady Lay', 'Ballad of a thin man', 'Knockin on Heavens Door', 'Like a Rolling stone' and so on) but has key Band tracks too - 'The Weight', 'Cripple Creek', 'The Night they Drove old Dixie down', 'Stage Fright'.

The Band were actually more Canadian than American and started as The Hawks, backing Ronnie Hawkins (Therefore, The Hawks, geddit?) before being hired by Dylan in 1965. 'Music from the Big Pink' was their 1968 debut featuring (and few know this) Van the man.

It's country and it's rock n roll but it's great.

What we're listening to" Dimitri from Paris 'Le Chic'

I know what you're thinking...."Not much of an Album cover" and it's not - but what's inside, is. Need cheering up? you have just found it!

This is someone we've followed for years - DJ Dimitri from Paris who is in fact, Dimitri from Turkey, and became famous with his album 'Sacrebleu'.

Everything he has done has been superb. 

We note the Albums 'A night at the playboy mansion' and 'Disco Forever' but actually we came across him 20 years ago (?) from a free CD sampler on the cover of 'Mixmag'. 

He's all about funk, grooves and disco. There's no more Disco than the upsurge in Chic, Daft Punk and Nile Rogers, so this Album is where you'll find an extension remix of all that. 

Just released (July 2018) and you have (obviously) 'Le Freak', but Sister Sledge 'Lost in Music', 'I want your love', 'He's the greatest dancer' and so on. If this doesn't get you going, you're dead. It's a simple as that.

What we're listening to: Santana 'Abraxas'

Actually what spurred this on was a great recent viewing of a Santana Concert movie on Itunes 'Santana IV Live at The House of Blues' where the original band reform up. 

Really really good and whilst we're at it - do not miss the Patti Smith 'Horses' Movie. 

Everyone should be forced to watch it, so incredible.

Santana 'Abraxas' is considered by most to be their best Album and it was their 2nd in 1970. 

The name comes from a Herman Hesse book and the cover art is a painting by Mati Klarwein who was well known for Album cover art (Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' for example) in the days when that mattered....(but they're coming back with vinyl sales!).

'Samba Pa Ti' an instrumental is here and the superb 'Oye Como Va'  with of course, 'Black Magic Woman' (a Peter Green Fleetwood Mac song in fact).

This is summertime salsa, latin rhythms backed by the guitar work of Mexican Carlos Santana to explosive affect. It's also very different and interesting to hear with drums/bass the core of the songs.

It's actually sensational, so have a listen and tell us you're not impressed (!)

What we're listening to: Suzanne Vega 'Debut'

Californian who came to prominence with this debut record and the huge single, 'Marlene on the Wall' in 1995. 

This was the Album cover that featured in every student house party in the 80s. Everywhere you went where there were girls, it was either 'Marlene on the Wall' or Cohens 'Suzanne' playing. 

It there was no girls, it was all 'Sweet Home Alabama' or 'Harvest'.

Produced by Lenny Kaye (of the fabulous 'Horses' Patti Smith fame), it's folk but at the time, folk for an MTV/VHI1 generation. Her dramatic, memorable appearance on 'Whistle Test' stormed her into the UK charts.

You may know her best from The DNA excellent remix of 'Tom's Diner' in 1990 (link below) or the single 'Luka' but she was huge in the 80's. A Buddhist, she's very politically and socially astute and active still.

This Album went platinum and well worth having. 'Marlene on the Wall' is great (although might be a tad, overplayed), 'Small Blue thing' and 'The Queen and the Soldier' stand out. 

Interesting stuff though and different.

What we're listening to: Green Day 'American Idiot'

For obvious reasons but Green Day's 7th Album from 2004. However, it was actually the band's first number one Album.

It's a musical story (a punk rock opera it's often called) and was a stage show with a movie released in 2015. 

Green Day are "American punk" which is different to British punk. More Ramones rock n roll actually rather than The Stranglers. 

Big seller, Grammy winner, so it's a good Album and "inspired" by George Bush and the war in Iraq. Not sure what that means but.....Revitalised today across Europe, for Trumps visit to the UK. 

Not for who he is, but for what he stands for.

1987 and Jackson's 7th studio Album - 5 years after 'Thriller' (we've already talked about on this blog).

2 Grammies, one of the best selling records of all time (obviously) it further enhanced Jackson as the king of pop.

"The way you make me feel', "Smooth Criminal", "Bad" and "Man in the mirror" are just part of an 11 hit package, song after song. It also marked the last Album with Quincy Jones and Jackson.

It debuted at number one worldwide and in the UK was selling 100,000 records a day but never sold more than 'Thriller'. There's little else to say.

It's really a must-have Album. 

Pop, Disco but great just the same and at the time....earth-shattering. It's as simple as that.
