What we're listening to: T Bone Burnett 'The Criminal under my own hat'

Now here's an interesting man, T Bone Burnett.

1948 Missouri American who won grammys for producing other people's Albums, no less than 13, such as the soundtrack for 'O Brother where art though' and the terrific 2004 'A Wonderful World' from KD Lang and Tony Bennett. He did 'King of America' with Elvis Costello, 'The Union' with Elton John -  but there's too much credits to list here. Extraordinary body of work and never mind his endless film work.

In his own right, you might know the opening sting, soundtrack on the new Series 3 'True Detective' excellent as it is with The Handsome Family.

He is also considered as the driving force behind bands like Los Lobos, Counting Crows and even Roy Orbison. This is one talented guy. Even at one time, a professional golfer....and a property developer.

But in his own right, he's produced some great Albums, no less than this 1992 'Criminal under my own hat' which won its own grammy but frankly, he doesn't have the following he deserves as a singer-songwriter. 

He's very Johnny Cash influenced but as you'd expect, beautifully produced.

But totally diverse as you'll see from these 3 tracks which don't sound like they're from the same record. Really really interesting man. Check him out.

What we're listening to: Steely Dan 'Gaucho'

'Gaucho' was the 1980 and 7th Steely Dan Album. Now you'll find a lot in this blog (search top left) including Aja, Pretzel Logic, Donald Fagens The Nightfly, Can't Buy a thrill and other stuff but because they're on tour, it brought this back to mind.

(There's a tribute band called 'AJA' who come highly recommended. It's just like being at a Steely Dan gig so if you see them, go.)

'Hey Nineteen' was the single from this record but you may also know 'Time out of mind' and 'Babylon Sisters'? But actually it's just more Steely Dan great tunes, very much in the style. If you like the Band, you'll like this.

Gaucho was a strained Album to produce and often seen as their truly 'last' record. Steely Dan was really two people - Donal Fagen and Walter Becker - with different session men on each Album. Mark Knopfler plays here on 'Time out of mind' for example, Michael McDonald sings and the sleeve notes show 20 sidemen.

Walter Becker (who died in 2017) had drug issues during the recording and in fact, was hit by a car whilst making it. His girlfriend died of a drug overdose in his home at the same time.

So it was a "strained" relationship by the time of recording 'Gaucho'. 

You can hear drug references in the songs - "Tonight when I chase the dragon" on 'Time out of mind', "the fine Colombian" on 'Hey Nineteen'.

But it's just more great songs by a great Band, at the end of their prime.

Everyone needs The Dan in their life.

What we're listening to: Kacey Musgraves 'Same Trailer, Different Park'.

Welcome back to 2019's something a little different....

Kacey Musgraves is a Texan country singer but actually she's the antipathy of that, a non-country, country singer.....She basically turns over the current 'glam' country and brings it right back to where it started. In a way, she makes fun of what country music has had to become to make it more generally popular. Designer stetsons, celebrity glam, glossy country music awards.

If that makes any sense.... 

They often say therefore, that she's a country rebel. 

Look at the Album name - 'Same Trailer, Different Park' - and her posed pic and you'll get a sense of what she's saying. When you look at it again, it's almost comedic. 

Her follow up Album is called 'Pageant Material' and that also gives you a sense of her anti-country southern vibe. But it's all very real too.

This was her 2013 debut Album and the excellent "Merry go Round" was the single from it but 'Blowin Smoke' (definitely watch the video below!) also comes highly recommended. It won the Grammy for Best Country Album. 

In lots of ways, you'll love this. 

It's different and in parts, beautiful but above all, meaningful. A Dylan-esque exploration on life as good country should be. 

Real storytelling set to music. And you'll be onto someone whom few yet know of, so they'll be impressed in the pub.

What we're listening to: Phil Spector 'A Christmas Gift'

And so we end the year with a Christmas Album.....Beach Boy Brian Wilson's favourite Album of "all time" no less and The Rolling Stones number one Christmas record too. 

This is Phil Spector 1963 (released on the same day in fact, of JFK's assassination which meant it got little attention and performed poorly) and so it was re-released in 1972 and did well.

With his famous 'wall of sound' treatment to Christmas classics by his signed stars (The Ronettes who featured Ronnie Bennett whom Spector later married, and The Crystals, for example) of the time.

The unknown Sonny & Cher worked as studio assistants during the recording, Brian Wilson played on some of the tracks. 

Spector is currently in a Stockton prison since 2009 sentenced to 19 years for murder. He might play it to cheer him up.

But you'll want to put a Christmas record on over Christmas, so this is the one that at least, will give you some street cred.....(and actually, it's great too). It's on Itunes for sure.

The Streamabout 2018 Album of the Year. (And Album of the Year in the 13 year old category....)

Don't think it'll make Album cover design of the year (it's the track listing on the side with some colouredy dots) but the 1975 'A brief inquiry' will be in everyone's top 5 Albums of 2018. And so it should be.

Now, this is one for the headphones, because it's all about layers of interesting sound and production. It won't have the same impact in the car or the office despite being promoted under the campaign as 'Music for Cars'. It's not.

Somewhere between Floyd and Boyzone, this is pop music pure and simple. More Radiohead perhaps. You get a real Talking Heads feel from the first video below, so it's hard to 'pigeonhole' and that marks out great records. 

A Manchester band and this their 3rd Album with Matthew Healy at the core. The son of Denise Welch ('Natalie Barnes' in Corrie it seems) and Tim Healy (whom you'd know straight away from Auf Wiedersehen Pet) so it's that theatrical background that actually makes sense when you hear the record.

What makes it Album of the Year is its difference. 

Really interesting grooves, great production and standout listening. You get stuck into it. Unexpected transitions, chord changes, new sounds.

And that just doesn't happen anymore.

Get it, because you'll hear more and more about it. And about them. 

And we played it a lot recently, although recently released - we still do. 

So it definitely got the Streamabout vote easily and we do listen to a lot of stuff.

(ALBUM OF THE YEAR IN THE 13 YEAR OLD CATEGORY - If you don't mind....With Streamabout's permission and before the 3 videos from the 1975, you might be good enough to listen to the first video 'on vinyl' just quickly.

What we're listening to: Train 'Drops of Jupiter'

Train are a San Fran band formed in 1993 from a Led Zep tribute band. And they still do Led Zep songs at their gigs. 

Have to say, love their logo. 

This 2001 Album was their second and followed their 1998 debut 'Train' also highly regarded. It got the band huge attention and so this, 'Drops of Jupiter', is double platinum, 2 grammys and still their best selling record. 

The title track was a massive "hit" as they say.

It's rock with a little bit of country but very commercial.

So it's something you may not know and want to have a look at.
It's played a lot at Streamabout for sure.

1976 and a triple live Album no less. 

It was remastered in 2013 so that's the one to get.

Recorded during the Wings 'Over the World' tour and as someone in here said, she preferred The Beatles when they became, Wings.....

Of course, Paul McCartney at the core here and so too, the Album contains Beatle songs - 'Yesterday', 'Long and Winding Road', 'Blackbird' and others. 

But it also focuses on Wings "hits" like 'Listen to what the man said', 'Hi Hi Hi' (banned at one stage because it was really 'High High High'), 'Beware my love' and the really very excellent, 'Silly Love songs'. 

'Maybe I'm amazed' was released as the single from this record.

Linda McCartney features of course and the great Denny Laine ('The Moody Blues', who left the band after McCartney's refusal to tour following Lennon's death). 

It's a great record really.

Captures the live mood perfectly and captures the era in what was, Paul McCartney's real solo venture after The Beatles. You'll also find their 'Band on the run' Album in this blog by searching top left.

The Album of many covers because this is not how I remember it...Anyway.

Sheryl Crow 1993 debut but she was well known before then. From Missouri, she was not just a majorette, a beauty queen, but a star "hurdler' in athletics (if that's what you call someone who jumps over hurdles....)

A music teacher too, who toured as backing vocals with Michael Jackson during his 'Bad' Tour. But she also worked with Don Henley and Stevie Wonder never mind writing advertising jingles. Busy, busy.

The James Bond theme, "Tomorrow never dies" is hers. I know you didn't know that. 

This debut comes from a musician's "collective" she attended, called 'The Tuesday Night Music Club' and of course, got lots of attention from the single "All I wanna do" and "Leaving Las Vegas". 3 Grammies helped too.

She dated Clapton, Owen Wilson, Lance Armstrong and has played with everyone,. She's a walking "who's-who" of music and very well regarded.

This is country at the core - but pop country. It's a happy record and a strong one. Definitely an interesting listen.

Now we know, this mightn't be for everyone but as we always say, keep those ears open! You just never know if you give music a listen.

This is honky-tonk hillbilly country. It's shootin', fishin' country of the old Buck Owens, Johnny Cash type, but revisited.

1995 and Dwight's 6th Album with the excellent "Heart of Stone", "That'll be me" and "Sorry you asked" as the standout singles.

He's from Kentucky but raised in Ohio and probably produces the best Albums covers anywhere. The man has stetson style although he toured with Stevie Earle and Lucinda Williams which are more "new" country.

And he sells biscuits. 'Bakersfield Biscuits' is the brand.

It's great stuff and don't ignore it.

What we're listening to: Deep Purple 'In Rock'

A truly great record from a Band at the height of their powers in 1970 (they formed in 1968). You'll also find their 1972 'Machine Head' Album on this blog by searching top left.

The name 'Deep Purple' was suggested by Ritchie Blackmore from his grandmother's favourite song. Betcha' didn't know that...

This was what's called the 'Mark 2' line up with the incredible Gillan on vocals, Blackmore, Glover, the wonderful Jon Lord and Ian Paice (paicey) on drums. In fact there's few bands where the drummer is so much a part of it and Purple was definitely one of them.

Recorded in London with a Mount Rushmore cover (carved 'in rock' geddit?), this is hard-driving real Rock pure and simple. 

"Child in Time" is the standout track (developed by Jon Lord who died in 2011, developed from another Band's song called "Bombay Calling" and you can hear his organ playing as the intro) that made this Album their real breakthrough. And, if there was an Album worth having for one track alone, this is it.

"Speed King" you may also know and "Into the Fire".

There's remastered versions you should get, but don't be without this. One of the gems from the 1970's rock era. 

Frankly, from the best band of that time.
