What we're listening to: John Hiatt 'Bring the Family' and 'Budokan'

Like JJ Cale last week, here's another man who never really achieved the fame or sales he deserved - John Hiatt.

'Bring the Family' was his 1987 8th Album and first to chart, featuring Ry Cooder (guitar of course), Nick Lowe (bass) and Jim Keltner on Drums. Of course, the excellent single 'Have a little faith in me' got it the attention. You can hear it later, below.

The 'Comes Alive at the Budokan' Album, was 1994 and generally, could be seen as a "greatest Hits" compilation and excellent it is too - notably the production sound for a live Album is terrific. The cover design doesn't do it any favours but gives you a sense of a kicking live gig and the fun of a parody because..... It wasn't recorded at The Budokan (!)....

It was recorded throughout North America and the name is a cheeky swipe at the deluge of "At the Budokan" Albums of the time (Dylan) and it also had a go at Frampton's 'Comes Alive' Album.

"Have a little faith in me" is here but an excellent "Memphis in the Meantime" (Sun shining? Put the car roof down and turn it up! Real driving track) and "Thing called love" (you'll know Bonnie Raitts cover probably).

It's country, blues, rock, nothing else, but great rock at that.

He's from Indianapolis and moved early to Nashville and his songs have been covered by everyone from Springsteen to the great Willy De Ville.

Still going good at 66 and it's time for you to get to know him.....when the road is dark and you can no longer see.....
