What we're listening to: Ian Dury 'New Boots & Panties'

One of the great all-time Album covers (at 'Axfords Lingerie Shop' in Westminster - you can see a Woolworths store reflection from across the road, in the window), an all-time great Album name and from one of the all-time greats!

Hard to believe, Ian Dury is dead 18 years from cancer (at 57). He had polio all his life and started as an Art teacher, even doing illustrations for The Sunday Times. I saw him live and trust me, nothing got in his way.

1977 and this was his debut Album in a kind of a punk era thing. Often called the UK's first punk Album.

His hero was Gene Vincent and "Sweet Gene Vincent" is a great track here but so too, "Wake up and make love to me", "Billericay Dickie", "Clever Trevor" and on the re-issued version, "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" (banned by The BBC) and "What a Waste".

"Rhythm Stick" (1979) and "Reasons to be cheerful" came later which you might know better.

They're East End London, working class stories really and written by Dury and the great Chas Jankel.

One for the collection, for sure. The great, late, Ian Dury.
