What we're listening to: John Martyn 'Grace & Danger'

1980 it was (but get the 2007 De Luxe version) and whilst John was divorcing his wife, Beverley. You can hear the pain on the record - 'Some people are crazy', 'Baby please come home', 'Our love' and the iconicly excellent 'Sweet Little Mystery'

He had developed a friendship with Phil Collins at the time and he's here on Drums/backing vocals.

In a way, it's depressing or sad but in another, it's beautiful.

'Solid Air' (dedicated to Nick Drake) is often considered his best Album but 'Grace and Danger' has to come close and it was Martyn's own favourite.

London born, actually his real name was Iain McGeachy (Scottish father) - hardly the stuff of rock stars - and he's more jazzy folk then anything else, often recording completely freehand. He was a friend of Ireland (I worked at an Ad Agency where he dated the Receptionist) and he died here in Kilkenny in 2009.

A bit of a history of 'substance abuse' (alcohol a real problem even in live performances tragically) but left a legacy of beautiful work really and was awarded an OBE. A bit of an original, there's no doubt.

You'll enjoy this Album as did the Streamabout crew but it's deep....in a good emotional way. One of the great tracks of all time too and here it is, from Dublin live, appropriately...
