What we're listening to: Grace Jones 'Nightclubbing'

Jamaican singer and Studio 54 fashion model, Grace Jones, released this her 5th Album, in 1981. She had appeared on the covers of Elle and Vogue for major French fashion houses living with Jerry Hall

This is New wave, reggae, pop, disco, funk, an eclectic mix which includes covers as diverse from David Bowie/Iggy Pop ("Nightclubbing") to the great Bill Withers ("Use me").

Sting's 'Demolition Man' appears here but also later on a Police Album (Ghost in the Machine). So you get the picture of its diversity.

The single was of course, "Pull up to the bumper" which she wrote and the second single, "I've seen that face before" - but you'll also probably know, "Walking in the rain"

It was at the time, seen as a new departure fusing art, sex and fashion with high production values including session heads from 'Sly + Robbie'. It was Chris Blackwell of Island records who put it all together as he did with The Pretenders and Roxy Music similarly (you might know Jones version of their 'Love is the Drug').

She of course, became an icon and had a "look" as you'll see from the superb Album cover of her in an Armani suit, smoking (a painted photography by Goude).

Her vocal is very in your face, almost speaking as much as singing. It's smouldering.

One thinks now, of the influence on say, Rhianna or Lady Gaga.

Having seen her live in an intimate Dublin venue, she gets right into the audience and scarily so, bringing some of stage. It's not a gig, it's a show.

The Album was a critical and a commercial success. Rightly so, because it's so different.

She's nearly 70 (can you believe that?) and she's just appeared on the new Gorillaz Album 'Humanz' which is great too by the way.

Get it, you'll love it.
