Billy Joel has featured here before for 'Glass Houses'. This is the 1978 Album that just preceded that and it was his 6th. (His first Album, 'Piano Man' was from 1973).
Winning 2 Grammys (Joel has won 6), it was produced by the late Phil Ramone and '52nd street' was the jazz heart of New York where actually, it was recorded. It was also the home of his label, CBS records and Billy is from The Bronx NYC.
The title track is well known but so too "My Life", "Honesty" and "Big Shot". Actually it's a real Album to listen to carefully, if you know what I mean. Not just as background music.
I was amazed to see Jazz legend Freddie Hubbard played on it (!) but so too a cast of thousands including Hugh McCracken (The Dan). A jazzy, low key record, it established Joel's songwriting credentials. You may not know, he also was well established for Boxing credentials too, winning 22 bouts and a big motorcycle fan, owning a motorcycle shop.
He still tours and plays (April 2017) and is nearly 70. A legend really and '52nd Street' is a good showcase of his smooth jazzy talent. Well worth the listen and a classic Album for any collection.
And you simply have to play this every time you mention Billy. The Sound of a generation....
