What we're listening to: The Verve 'Urban Hymns'

1997 from The Verve and their third Album, their biggest seller and one of the best selling Albums ever. Of course 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' was huge and so too, 'The Drugs don't work' and 'Lucky Man'.

'Bitter Sweet Symphony' was mired in legal problems having included a sample of a Stones track, 'The last time'. In a way, the excellent and memorable video of Ashcroft lip-syncing the song and nonchalantly walking down a London street no matter what happens, was supposed to illustrate those problems. Have a look....

At the time, 'sampling' was all the rage....

From Wigan, Manchester UK (they met in College), the Album cover shot is Richmond Park, London, The Verve was really based around Richard Ashcroft on vocals. This is the record that really propelled the Band (who split two years later in 1999) and Ashcroft has since recorded excellent solo records ('Human Conditions' worth checking out).

It's another great Album, really worth having. Bit different and often said to be avant-garde. Don't get that - but it's different like all good records should be. And few are....
