What we're listening to: Jim Croce 'You don't mess around with Jim'

Is it the weather or that we're nearing Christmas? I dunno, but there's a softer mood about in Streamabout. Playing, 'America', 'Hall & Oates' these weeks and now this.

Jim Croce.

No harm, because it's all great and everyone here is building a record collection on Itunes as a consequence each week.

Jim Croce was born in Pennsylvania of Italian descent releasing his first Album ("Facets") in 1966. "You Don't mess around with Jim" was his third Album from 1972 and was huge.

The title track "You don't mess around with Jim" was a big hit and you might have heard it recently on the very excellent 'Stranger Things' soundtrack.

But so too other great tracks are here like, "Time in a Bottle" and "Operator that's not the way it feels".

Subsequently "New York is not my home" and "Photographs and memories" became well known too. He had also had a hit with "Bad bad Leroy Brown" which you might know. There's lots of greatest hits records so again, no harm to have one as a good introduction to Croce.

But it was this Album that got him touring and on TV shows so financially, Croce started to break through. He became 'famous' and seemingly hated all of that.

Only a year later in September 1973, the day before another single "I got a name" was released, Jim died in a plane crash when their Beechcraft plane clipped a 'pecan' tree on take-off in Louisiana. It killed 5 others including his band members, the pilot and road manager. He was flying between concerts on his way to Austin, Texas on a foggy night.

He's buried in Penn.

After his death, another great track, "I have to say I love you in a song" was released and possibly, his best.

So a tragic short life, but a great songwriter and if you don't know him, start now. A little dated perhaps but it's still songwriting at the core. Pity there wasn't time for more....
